Los Angeles - The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) today announced the Los Angeles District Office winners of their annual Small Business Week Awards competition. The Los Angeles SBA Office covers Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. Newbury Park headquartered Digital Consulting Services (DCS)'s owner, Joel Oropesa was selected as the Small Business Person of The Year.
The Award will be presented to Mr. Oropesa at the SBA's 23rd Annual Small Business Week Awards Luncheon to be held from 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. on Friday, May 25, 2004 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The luncheon to be presented by Bank of America is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the SBA with media sponsorship provided by the Los Angeles Business Journal. Mr. Oropesa arrived in Los Angeles from Cuba as a teenager with a yearning for knowledge. He went on to acquire Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering from California State University Los Angeles and the University of Southern California and spent 25 years in the IT industry with Burroughs, Hughes Aircraft, Xerox, and Digital Equipment before he was caught up in the early 1990s Southern California downsizing. In 1994 Joel Oropesa co- founded Digital Consulting Services with a home equity loan. The other owner, Jeff Daymude, was one of Joel's former customers. His company steadily grew and in 2000 became certified as a SBA 8(a) contractor. Since then through aggressive self-marketing DCS has acquired 40 8(a) contracts that generate $4 million in annual sales. Along the way to becoming a thriving high technology company with 48 employees and $15 million in revenues, DCS made the prestigious listing of the Diversity Business. Com Div 500, placing 444 on the 2003 list of the nation's top 500 diversity-owned businesses. Source: Los Angeles District Press Office |
